Kenya Prepare For Botswana Sevens Tournamen

Oct 21, 2021

Kenya’s build up for the Africa Rugby Confederation women’s seven-a-side tournament has picked up after the technical bench identified a provisional list of 19 players from which the final squad will be named.

As expected, Mwamba has the bulk of players in the provisional list providing 13 players. The two coaches Pritt Nyandat and Sammy Kemmey have been putting the players through the paces at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa ground and expect good results in Botswana where the tournament will be played from October 29-30.

“There is stiff competition for the available places which is good to ensure that we get the best team,” acknowledged Kemmey.

There has been a change in leadership with Abedeen Shikoyi taking over the captain’s band from Celestine Navalayo.

The resilient former captain is still expected to be part of Kenya’s plan in Botswana unless she is unavailable.

Assisting Shikoyi is Anita Omondi. It is unlikely the team that travels to Botswana will be changed much when they pack their bags for the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens the following month.

In Botswana, Kenya will be up against neighbors Uganda who have been training under Anthony Kinene.

The She Cranes inched their way back to the competition through a unique fundraising event after the Uganda Rugby Union went back on their word to withdraw for lack of funds. Through an initiative http://www.justgiving.com/botswannasevens/, the team are almost realising their target of raising the Sterling pounds 5,500.They have raised 86 percent.

Provisional squad: Abedeen Shikoyi, Angela Olum, Anita Omondi, Catherine Abilla, Celestine Navalayo, Clementina Atieno, Doreen Remour, Everline Odero, Mary Otieno, Millicent Opalla, Philadelphia Olando, Jane Owino, Rachel Adhiambo (Mwamba), Irene Awino, Linda Nandwa, Mary Musieka (Rovers), Janet Midecha, Kezia Adhiambo, Robinah Wambui (Vivi).
