Kibaki,Raila to attend London Olympics

President Mwai Kibaki will lead the Kenyan delegation to the London Olympics Opening ceremony on July 27.

Prime minister Raila Odinga said on Wednesday that Kibaki would be among the state leaders that would grace the Opening ceremony while he would attend the closing on August 12, and also watch some of the Athletics competition at the Olympic stadium in Stratford.

“We agreed with the president that he goes first and attend the Opening ceremony and I will follow some days later to be at the Closing ceremony,” said Raila.

The Prime Minister presided over Team Kenya’s official send off dinner Wednesday evening in Nairobi organised by the Olympic sponsor Procter and Gamble. Procter and Gamble, boosted the Kenya team Olympics kitty with a Ksh.5m sponsorship.

Raila said the Government hopes that the 48-member team woyld be able to beat the 1988 Seoul Olympics eight gold medal haul. Sports Minister Dr Paul Otuma who also attended the dinner said the Government had set aside ksh.1 billion towards sports development , which will be disbursed through the 47 Counties.

Otuoma said the Government is also looking at setting up a National Sports Institute that will solely seek to train and nurture sportsmen and women and also technical officials, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

“Plans are underway to upgrade sporting facilities across the country to satisfy the needs of disabled people too. With the implementation of the sports bill sports will take a new dimension in terms of growth and development,” said Otuoma.

"My Government has also factored in the 2013 the setting up of an International Sports Academy,"said Kibaki during the official flag handing over ceremony and State House Nairobi.

" The academy will be utilized for specialized training in various sporting activities.  Researchers and other sports professionals will also find the Academy useful."

Kibaki promised Government rewards for the those who excel at the London Olympics.
