Makii Barred From Contesting KRU Vice Chairmanship

Mar 26, 2021

Sadik Makii, a former Kenya Rugby Union director has been barred from vying for the post of vice chairmanship when the Union holds an annual general meeting on March 28, 2021 at the Rugby Football Union of east Africa ground.

The KRU released the names of the contestants for the five available directorship posts. A communique to all the affiliated clubs obtained by sportsnewsarena.com shows that Makii’s nomination was invalid according to clause 10.5 of the KRU Constitution.

His exclusion leaves another former KRU Director Sasha Mutai (Mean Machine) as the only aspirant for the second most powerful post in the KRU.

The post of secretary has drawn a crowded field of four contestants among them Paul Nyamodi (Quins), the current acting secretary, Willy Ombisi (Impala), Kennedy Riungu (Nondies) and Jack Okoth (Blak Blad).

There have been conflicting reports about Ombisi’s candidacy after earlier reports showed that he was not legible. Sportsnewsarena.com confirmed that his name remains on the nominations released by the KRU.

The treasurer’s position is a straight contest between the KRU-backed Henry Emuye and Gabriel Ouko (Quins) who has been nominated by Kenya Harlequin FC.

There are eight contestants for the post of Director. They are Chiro Nyinge (KCB), Paul Okong’o (Mombasa Sports Club), Philip Jalang’o (Kisumu), Isaac Mwangi (Homeboyz), Sammy Muraya (Nondies), Mwangi Mucemi (Nakuru), Oscar Oyowo and Edward Rombo (KRU). It is easy to see the pattern and the alliances from the nominations of the contestants.

The nominations follow a predictable trend. Okoth is believed to be behind the motion to pass a vote-of-no-confidence on three KRU Directors Terry Adembesa, Michael Rabar and Paul Nyamodi. He has been nominated by Blak Blad who sent a notice of the agenda to KRU.

Mwangi and Jalang’o are fronted by the KRU Board which has had support from Western Kenya and Mombasa. Jalang’o, a former Kenya Harlequin FC chairman has been proposed by Kisumu RFC while Mwangi who was a nominee by Mwangi Muthee has been nominated by Homeboyz.

This explains why Paul Okong’o was nominated by Mombasa. There has been a lot of activity at the weekend with the contestants looking for votes.

Also, there have been allegations of ‘vote buying’ by some contestants.

Stop Press: The KRU has called for a press briefing on Tuesday, just one day before the annual general meeting.
