Mariga And Mugabe Meet In Dublin Super Cup

Jul 31, 2021

Sibling rivalry was not on the minds of the organizers of the Dublin Super Cup match between Italian Serie A side Inter Milan and Glasgow Celtic from the Scottish Premier League.

Two brothers - from Kenya - Victor Mugabe ‘Wanyama’ and MacDonald Mariga ‘Wanyama’ - were on the line ups of Glasgow Celtic and Inter Milan. Mugabe is the younger brother of Mariga.

The Harambee Stars duo started on the bench and it was Mariga who came on as a substitute for Stankovic in the 57th minute. He saw his shot blocked in the second half of this 10-man Inter Milan team which was playing its’ fifth pre-season friendly. Mugabe watched from the bench.

According to the Glasgow Celtic website, the match which was fiercely contested was won 2-0 by Inter Milan. The match remotely resembled a pre-season friendly. The Scottish side was fervently supported by their fans but were muted by a goal in the seventh minute by Luc Castaignos, an 18-year old player signed from Feyenoord.

Referee Damien Hancock flashed six yellow cards and one red. Four of the yellow cards were served to the visiting team and two to the hosts. Inter Milan’s Thiago Motta was shown the red card in the 44th minute.

At half time, Wesley Sneijder and Samuel Eto’o were introduced mainly to close up the mid-field
