The Nairobi Basketball Association will this Saturday kick off the first youth basketball league in Kenya.

The league will kick off on July 28 and games will be played every third Saturday of the month.

To kick off the league, we have attracted the participation of three teams for the girls under 12, and five teams for the boys under 12,” notes NBA Chairman Ronnie Owino.

The competition will see teams in three age group categories, under 12, under 15, and under 18 for both boys and girls compete for junior honours.

Kayole, Kibera, Langata will have teams participating in the under 12 category for boys while in the girls under 12, category, Kamukunji, Langata, Kayole and Mennonites will be in action.

The NBA has kicked off the league with existing youth programmes with an agenda of expanding it further. “

The league will serve as a foundation for growing a grassroots basketball programme where kids start playing the game early.

Most basketball players in Kenya interact with the game for the first time when they reach high school

. “In future, we would like to see children in Nairobi playing basketball from when they are 10 and below. We will be able to track the players as they mature and track their progress in basketball for those who choose to take it up as a sport when in high school.

The league will be combined with coaching drills from time to time so as to make sure that we are achieving good results in nurturing talent," Ronnie said.

" We will also seek to partner with teams participating in the league so that they incorporate a youth programme where they train.”
