Two rare draws, an upset win by Mean Machine over Strathmore University and two close results marked the resumption of the Kenya Cup league matches this weekend after the Christmas and New Year’s break.

Mwamba’s hopes of starting the year on a winning note after a good run towards the end of last year took a big knock when they were narrowly beaten 22-20 by Impala at Impala Club. The Red Shirts led 6-5 at half time courtesy of two penalties by Vincent Mose.

Impala’s try scorers were David Orato and Robert Odhiambo, a new kid on the block who just cleared school last year. They both crossed the chalk line in the second half. Odhiambo was captain of St. Mary’s School last year and has been playing for Impala II.

The game which was too close to call was won by Impala in the last 10 minutes and thus denying Mwamba chairman Alvas Onguru an early birthday present. Mwamba replied with a try by Dan Shikuta, another fast-rising junior player.

Dennis Ombachi crossed the line twice for Mwamba who played Humphrey Kayange, a former national seven-a-side captain at flank and player-coach Tito Oduk at number eight. Kevin Wambua kicked over one conversion and added a penalty.

At the Lion’s Den in Ruaraka, visiting Nakuru RFC ‘Wanyore’ led 8-7 at half time before muting the roar by KCB forcing a rare 25-all draw.

Try scorers for Nakuru were Mike Shihoso and Dennis Abenga, They were awarded a penalty try by the referee Godwin Karuga in the second half. Bernard Chirchir put over a drop goal and scrum half Bernard Macharia added one conversion.

The bankers replied with two tries by Darwin Mukidza. Sebastian Shivoka and Oliver Mang’eli scored one try each. Peter Mutai slotted one conversion and Jeevan Ochieng added a penalty. Mean Machine upset Strathmore University 8-5.
