The annual Sportsman of the Year Awards, SOYA has been handed three million shillings boost, with National Bank of Kenya extending its sponsorship and pledging a further injection of funds.

National bank renewed its corporate support of the Kenyan sporting awards on Friday, which will see it triple its support from one million shillings.

The bank's Deputy Managing Director Isaiah Mworia said the decision to increase their support is due to the excellent organization and the great role the awards play to inspire Kenyan sportsmen and women.

“Our sportsmen and women do a lot for this country. Whenever they win it brings pride to the country as well as helps unite everyone irrespective of tribe and background.

“It is for this reason that we have decided to support various sporting events in the country as well as this award,” he said.

The bank, a major sponsor of athletics in the country has been one of the key sponsors of the event since 2009.

SOYA founder Olympiad Paul Tergat said as in the past seven editions deserving sports people and teams will be considered in a fair and objective selection process.

“We have always had in place a credible vetting process over the years and intend to maintain the same now and in the future,” he said.

SOYA panel chairman Chris Mbaisi was happy with the boost, which could mean increased prize money for Kenya’s major sporting awards.

The 2011 awards ceremony will be held in December at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, Nairobi.
