Dec 06, 2011-

The hills around Mariakani will reverberate with the roar of turbo charged machines with over 50 drivers enlisted for the KCB Mtaani Rally 2011.

The event, which wraps up the eight-leg KCB Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC), will be flagged off outside KCB Mariakani branch on Sunday. The organizers, Mombasa Motor Club (MMC) have lined up three competitive stages which will be repeated twice.

According to MMC Secretary Essak Ghalia, the transport distance is 190km with the competitive mileage totaling 188km. The longest competitive stage will be an exciting 57.5 kilometer endurance run around Matope while the shortest stage is an 18.4km stretch at Mtaa area. The other one is the 24.0 kilometer stage running entirely at Mnyenzeni.

Scrutineering is scheduled for Saturday at the Mombasa Railway Station. Essak clarified that there will be no overnight parc ferme after scrutineering.

The Service Park will be situated at Mnyenzeni Primary School. Prize giving and Finish are programmed for 5pm at Mnyenzeni Primary School.

The rally will be run in accordance with the "wat spot" seeding system which places some 2WD cars ahead of the KNRC cars in the staring order.

With Alastair Cavenagh and Carl Tundo missing in action, a fervent father-and-daughter team is expected to inject additional zest to the event. Veteran Safari Rally driver and Lanet based wheat farmer Frank Tundo, 61, is returning from a long sabbatical and will be driving his son’s (Carl Tundo) Mitsubishi Lancer EVO9 contraption. Frank will be navigated by his daughter Tash Tundo, who has previously been involved in the organization of Rift Valley Motor & Sports Club (RVM&SC) events in various capacities.

In the absence of Carl and Cavenagh the focus will be on the 2011 KNRC Champion Ian Duncan, 2008 Champion Baldev Chager, veteran Azar Anwar and the Horsey siblings Peter and Alex.
