Nigeria started the 17th edition of the CAF Orange U20 Youth Championship in style with a 2-1 victory over African and world U 20 champions, Ghana on Monday at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg.

Aware of each other’s pedigree and the high stake involved in winning this game, both teams chose to play cautious;  with long balls,  collective attacks, fall back, absorb the  pressure and counter attack again.

It needed the efforts of Nigeria’s Innocent Nwofor to break the deadlock with just two minutes past the quarter mark  to give Nigeria a one nil lead.

The Black Satellites pressed on for an equaliser until the 30th minutes when on a counter attack Boakye Richmond headed in to level the score before the break.

Back from the dressing room both teams maintained the same momentum, sporadically testing each other’s defence for weaknesses until the 81st minute when Innocent Nwofor hit home Nigeria’s second to give the Flying Eagles the much needed lead to top Group B, at least until the outcome of another group B game between Gambia and Cameroun.

At the end of the game the happier of the coaches John Obuh was upbeat after winning this important victory especially against Ghana.

“I am Happy to have won the opening game especially against a strong team like Ghana.

Nigeria who now tops group B will be meeting the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun in their next encounter on the 21 while Ghana will be meeting Gambia in an attempt to catch-up.

Cameroon started its campaign with a 1-0 win against the young Scorpions of Gambia at the Dobsonville Stadium in Johannesburg South Africa.

In Group A matches, the Young Pharoahs of Egypt kicked off their Under 20 CAF Orange African Youth Championship on a positive note as they beat Lesotho 2-0 Sunday at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto Johannesburg.

A victory which helped the Egyptians secure a second place in group A behind Mali who beat South Africa 4-2 in the events opening encounter played earlier.
