Chelagat wraps up Mombasa meet with sprint double win

After a dominant display on the opening day of the National Bank of Kenya/ Athletics Kenya weekend meeting at Mbaraki Stadium in Mombasa, Africa 400m Hurdles Bronze medalist Maureen Chelagat carried on her  fine run on form Saturday with victories in the in the 110m Hurdles and 400m .

Chelagat who had won the 400m Hurdles and 800m was unrivalled in the 400m which she won in 46.1 ahead of Elizabeth Muthoka(58.3) chasing an olympic berth after missing out on Beijing qualification after she was banned in 2008 for a doping offence.

Chelagat timed at 14.9 in the 110m Hurdles race ahead of Carol Waiganjo(15.6).

Machakos athletics Club capitalized on the absence of the bigwigs to sweep the boards in the women’s 1,500m race grabbing all the top six slots with Cecilia Maria winning the race in 4:34.6 while Lucy Ndambuki timed 4.49.3 for second place.

Ian Kipchumba reigned supreme in the men’s 1500m clocking 3.56.9. Titus Kathoka took second place in 3:57.0 while Francis Kakozi completed the top three places in 3.57.7.

The Machakos Club grabbed all the top six slots with Cecilia Maria winning the race in 4:34.6 while Lucy Ndambuki timed 4.49.3.

Damaris Mwathi was third . Ian Kipchumba reigned supreme in the men’s 1500m clocking 3.56.9. Titus Kathoka took second place in 3:57.0 while Francis Kakozi completed the top three places in 3.57.7.

Kipchumba (individual) also crossed the finish line first in the men’s 800m race in 1.51.6. This time, Kakozi running for Police swapped places in the two lap race with Nzoka finishing second in 1.51.8 with the latter taking third place in 1.52.2 seconds.

Like Kipchumba, Ibrahim Muya also posted a double, winning the 100 and 200m races. In men’s 100m, Muya posted 10.7 seconds to win the race ahead of Simon Kimaru of Police who clocked 11.0 for second slot and John Kituu also from Police in 11.2. Muya of Prisons went ahead to win the 200m in 23.2 seconds. Kituu (John) was second with a time of 23.5 while Wellington Nyakundi also of Prisons clocked 24.1 to finish third.

Asif that was not enough, Muya propelled his Prison team to victory in the 4x100. Prisons have won the relay in all the previous four-weekend meetings beating their Police counterparts hands down.

In 400m (men), Vincent Makori and Newton Rono both of GSU timed 50.2 and 50.4 for the first and second positions respectively ahead of third placed Kombo Twalib of Prison who clocked 50.6 seconds for the third position.

The men’s 400m hurdles saw John Kituu (Police) carry the day in 52.5 seconds, beating Emmanuel Kimeu to the second position in 53.7 seconds. Charles Tilikia timed 57.2 seconds for the third position.
