• Controversy Marks End Of Kenya Cup League

Apr 15, 2012-

Controversy has marked the final matches of the Kenya Cup rugby league after a Kenya Rugby Union Board meeting handed Kenya Harlequin the trophy on a silver platter last week.

During the Board Meeting, KRU docked Quins, Nakuru, Impala and Nondies two points each for boycotting matches at the start of the season.

A quick flash back to November 26, 2021 when some of the top clubs took KRU to task on various issues which threatened to split the league.

The issues were seemingly amicably resolved until last week when the teams were docked points. KRU docked Quins and Impala for boycotting the Kisumu RFC tie at the start of the season.Kisumu and Homeboyz had both travelled to honor the matches.

All matches had been rescheduled for April 6 if Kisumu and Homeboyz agreed to play. Nondies and Nakuru postponed theirs to April 21 because of the Great Rift 10’s. It is alleged that this postponement was with the blessings of the then acting KRU secretary Paul Nyamodi. He was also the KRU fixtures director.

But, the newly elected secretary Jack Okoth and the KRU chairman Mwangi Muthee reversed this decision explaining that Nakuru did not communicate their decision to postpone the match.

Nakuru were seeking legal address while Quins and Impala appealed against the deductions. With the new developments, it was down to the match between Kenya Commercial Bank and Kenya Harlequin FC on Saturday at the KCB Sports Club, Ruaraka.

Quins won 19-0 after a barren draw at half time. Fabian Olando and Eden Agero each missed a penalty in the first half. In the second half, Tony Mutai crossed the try line and Agero converted to break the deadlock.

Olando missed another penalty before Leslie Libasia scored the second try for Quins. Victor Sudi missed the conversion. The match which was played in a light drizzle saw Nick Barasa score under the sticks and Sudi converted for the win.

The trophy could not be handed over to Quins because of the appeals and a possible legal redress by Nakuru RFC.

In the other matches, Nakuru RFC edged out Strathmore University 24-21 at Nakuru Athletic Club. The students won the first leg 19-18.

Results KCB 0 Quins 19, Nakuru 24 Strathmore University 21, Impala 25 Mean Machine 10, Nondies 29 Kisumu 0, Mwamba 13 Homeboyz 11.
