Cuba won the boys' volleyball gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games, beating Argentina 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 17-25, 25-20) at Toa Payoh Sports Hall as the games came to a close in Singapore.

Wilfredo Leon with 35 of the 92 points Cuba scored in the final.

"This medal is a great achievement because it was so unexpected," he said. "We were hoping to get a bronze. This is the result of a lot of hard training, effort and discipline.

Belgium won the girls gold medal beating USA 3-1 of 17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-12 in the final. 

In Hockey, a 67th minute penalty stroke conversion carried Australia to a 2-1 victory against Pakistan for the gold medal in the Youth Olympic Games.

Australia ended the competition unbeaten in six matches.

Denmark's women and Egypt's men emerged as forces to be reckoned with in handball after wins in their respective finals.

Denmark bounced back from behind to pip the Russians 28-26 in the dying moments of the match and snatch gold at the International Convention Centre.

The Egyptian men's team relied on its tight defence to keep scoring low early, before pulling away from the Koreans in the final period to take the gold medal with a solid 35-25 win.  

Earlier, the Brazilian women's handball team beat Kazakhstan 45-23 to win the bronze as France overwhelmed Brazil 40-27 to clinch men’s bronze.
