Mar 12, 2011-The Kenyan Curling team registered an improved performance in this year’s European Open Ice Stock Sport championships held between the March 2-7, 2011 in Bruneck Italy.

According to Kenya Curling Association chairman Tim Ngugi only eight players; 5 ladies and 3 men travelled to Italy after 4 were denied Visas.  Kenya was ranked 6th out of 8 countries in the men’s category and 10 out of 11 nations in the women’s category of the team game competition.

In the individual target Sebastien Oketch was the top ranked Kenyan at position 32 out of 53 while in the ladies rankings Janet Chumba finished 28th out of 32 competitors.  "We came back home with increased knowledge on stocking out which is hitting the stock directly and placing skills- so that the stock stops at the target. We also want to embrace decision making as a team, to lay out our strategy especially for team target and team game competitions. In addition our players learnt how to pick the right soles depending on how the opponent plays," said Ngugi.

Kenya competed in Category ‘B’ and was up against Belarus, Israel, Guatemala, Poland, Denmark, Luxemburg and Ukraine in the men’s category while in the ladies grouping opponents were drawn from  Germany, Brazil, Finland, Austria, Czech Republic, Belarus, Slovenia, Switzerland and Russia. The team is expected to resume training soon to start preparations for the Africa Cup championships to be held at the end of August in Windhoek Namibia. The continental event will feature the four Ice Stock playing nations in Africa namely; Kenya, Namibia, Egypt and Tunisia.  Plans are also underway to organize a national curling competition.
