• Dunford ranks seventh in 50m fly at the World championships

Kenya’s Jason Dunford finished a disappointing seventh in Monday’s finals of the 50m Butterfly after a fine run in the qualifying heats and semi-finals of the World Swimming championships in Shanghai,China.

Dunford finished seventh in the tight final, which saw  Brazilian Cesar Cielo Filho successfully defend his world title in 23.10 seconds a big improvement from his qualifying time of 23.26 in the semis. Australian duo of Mathew Targett(23.28) and Geoff Huegill(23.25)won silver and bronze respectively.

Dunford however slackened in the final posting 23.60 which was slower than his qualifying time of 23.48 which was a Kenyan record in the 50m butterfly.The Commonwealth Games champion however has a chance to redeem himself in the 100m Butterfly on Friday.

His younger brother David and the only Kenyan lady swimmer at the world championships will be in action on Wednesday in the men’s 100m Freestyle and the women’s 50m Backstroke respectively.

The world swimming championships ends on Sunday July 31.
