Gor Mahia to pay out their sacked players

The eight Gor Mahia players who were fired on Tuesday for non-performance will be paid a two-months’ salary in accordance to the exit clause in their contracts.

The Club secretary general George Bwana said the affected players are entitled to their April and May salaries. “According to the contact, in the event the players are dismissed, they are entitled to salaries for the ended month and the one after,” Bwana said.

On Tuesday afternoon the club announced the sacking of eight players for non-performance in a move reminiscent of a similar incident last season when AFC Leopards fired 10 players.

Want-away midfielder Collins ‘Gatusso’ Okoth, winger Dan Makori, Congolese import Demonde Selenga and January signing Hugo Nzoka were notable players kicked out. Also fired were Anthony Nyangor, Nigerian defender Felinxinho Nwosu, Peter Juma formerly with Karuturi Sports and left back Collins Omondi.

Bwana was quick to absolve the club from blame over the radical move aimed at reviving the team’s fortunes in the second leg of the season, saying the club reserves the right to terminate dismiss players as stipulated in the contract.

“Our decision was informed purely on the players’ performance. Most of these players have given a very low output. Some of these players have played for only 30 minutes since the start of the season. Others have managed just one hour of play time”, Bwana said.

He added that club management was fully behind Croatian coach Zdravko Logarusic and will support all the technical decisions he makes.

Meanwhile, news of the sackings was received in shock by the affected players. “I did not see this coming, but I respect the club’s decision. I will need time to come to terms with the news before I chart the way forward”, Makori said.

Nyangor was similarly disappointed. “I never expected this to happen. I signed a long term commitment with the club which was to take me through up to 2014. I will see the options available when the second leg of the season begins”, he said.

With the exit of the bulk of its playing unit, Gor which has been struggling since the start of the season and are currently 11th in the 16-team table, is expected to sign heavily during the mid-season transfer window.

However, Bwana said that the work of signing new players will be the mandate of the club’s technical committee headed by vice chairman David Kiilo in conjunction with the technical bench.
