Nov 16, 2010-

Speed chess stalwart Mehul ‘Gorilla’ Gohil was on fine form as he defeated Matthew ‘Negz’ Kanegeni  in an explosive Blitz Chess Showdown held in Nairobi over the weekend.

Gohil eclipsed Kanegeni’s early 4-0 lead to clinch the much-hyped contest 7-5 in a 12 round boxing type contest to retain his National Blitz Championship title.

The showdown organized and arbitrated by Githinji Hinga is one of many efforts to popularize the game of chess.

Blitz chess is an exciting fast form of the game where every player has five minutes on the clock to make all his moves or else lose on

And in the ongoing League,Former champions KCB made clear their intentions of reclaiming the national title with a fourth successive 4-0 victory away to Egerton University. This followed a similar score line against Kenyatta University who seemed to have run out of ammo after humbling league leaders NCC last weekend.

The bankers were represented by a star-studded team of former Kenya One Ben Magana, Olympians Matthew Kanegeni, Ben Nguku, Phillip Singe and organizing guru Githinji Hinga.

In another match Stima beat Egerton 3-1,Stima represented by Ricky Sang,Joseph
Atwoli,Matthew and Purity Maina while Egerton fielded Edward Oluoch, Fabian
Namnaba,Vincent Limo and Wycliffe Omani with the upset of the weekend coming on
board when little known Edward Oluoch tricked seasoned player Ricky Sang to win Egerton’s only point of the encounter.

Weekend hosts Egerton had something to cheer about beating KU 2.5-1.5 . KU had earlier lost  3.5-0.5 to Nairobi National Bank of Kenya at the Goan Gymkhana.
