• Jason Dunford qualifies for 50m Butterfly finals at the Worlds

Kenya’s top swimmer Jason Dunford began his quest for his first World Swimming championships medal qualifying fourth for the finals of the 50m Butterfly in Shanghai,China.

Dunford, the reigning Commonwealth Games 50m butterfly champion started off strongly in the 50m Butterfly on Sunday where he finished second in his heat in 23.48,which was won by Frenchman Florent Manaudou who touched the wall in 23:31.

He ranked fourth overall going into the semi finals behind Olympic and World Champion (50m freestyle) Brazilian Cesar Cielo Filho who clocked the fastest time of the qualifiers of 23.26 ahead of Australian Geoff Huegill (23.27) and Manaudou.

The 24 year old arguably Kenya’s most successful swimmer ever, yet again finished second in a fast semi final behind the Australian Huegill, 32 who posted 23.26.

Dunford, touched in 23.34 the fourth fastest time of the day.

Interestingly, the qualifying ranking was similar to the semi finals standings, which had the Brazilian Cielo first after winning his semifinal in 23.19 ahead of Manaudou (23.32). 

Cielo, the fastest man of the year so far, with a 22.98 is favoured to win the Gold.

Dunford a multiple champion in World Universiade, All African games and an Olympic finalist at the Beijing Games where he also held the world record for a couple of minutes is one of Kenya’s three swimmers at the worlds.  

The Kenyan torpedo will also be competing in the 100m Butterfly while his younger brother David has entered in the 50m and 100m Freestyle while Sylvia Bruenhler will be competing in the 50m freestyle, 50m Butterfly and in the 50m Backstroke.
