Kenya Commercial Bank reclaimed the national chess league in style when they walloped CBK Chess Club 4-0 at their Ruaraka home tuff under the stewardship of their long serving captain Isaac Baabu.
The bankers quartet of Ben Magana, Ben Nguku, Githinji Hinga and Philip Singe effortlessly outclassed CBK’s Joseph Khaduli , George Mathea, John Mukabi and Paul Oketch. In other games Checkmates’ Martin Oyamo and yours truly beat George Ochieng’ and Brian Taboso to salvage a 2-2 draw against the plucky Eastlanders.
In Mombasa fighting Kenyatta University stung hosts Mombasa Chess club 3-1, Mombasa had earlier thrashed Kenya Polytechnic 4-0.
The remaining league fixtures to be played over next two weeks. KCB wins the title they last won two seasons ago by taking an unassailable 9-point lead at the top of the league. Last years champions National Bank currently lie sixth in the league table.
Meanwhile FIDE Master Martin Gateri won the Invitational Fizza sponsored blitz chess championship ahead of pre tourney favourite Mehul Gohil with Githinji Hinga coming in third. Gateri amassed 10.5 points out of a possible 14 in the speed chess event held at Nairobi’s Goan Gymkhana Club and arbitrated by Kim Bhari and Mike Rua. In fourth position was George Mathea followed by George Mwangi, Akello Atwoli, Phillip Singe and Wycliffe Obutu.
The tourney’s main sponsor Aslam Adam is a former member of Kenya’s Olympiad team.
