Kenya Commercial Bank chess team took pole position in the league title race when they beat defending champions National Bank of Kenya 2.5 to 1.5 in a tense encounter at the Cool Breeze restaurant in Mombasa. 

On board one Ben Magana tried to squeeze a win in a tight ending against NBK’s Wycliffe Obutu but had to settle for a draw. The game was won for KCB on boards 3 and 4 where Matthew Kanegeni outshined Steve Ouma while Githinji Hinga out maneuvered George Mwangi. NBK’s win came on borad 4 where Wangombe Mugo beat Philip Singe.

 

In other results Mombasa’s Nathan Ateka, Jonah Langat, Paul Ombui and Martin Muriuki fell to both NBK and KCB by the same scoreline 1-3.

Earlier Stima’s Ricky Sang, Joseph Atwoli, Allan Otieno and Purity Gachigi lost to NBK 0-4 and later held favorites  KCB to a 2-2 draw.

Ricky Sang and Joseph Atwoli aka Kaidanz did the damage on board 1 and 2 beating Ben Magana and Matthew Kanegeni respectively, while Githinji Hinga and Philip Singe cancelled Stima out on board 3 and 4 against Allan Otieno and Purity Gachigi.

In another match played in Nairobi ‘s Goan Gymkhana, Nairobi Chess Club run circles around Central bank of Kenya hammering the minters 4 -0 with wins coming from Peter Gilruth, Mehul Gohil, Kim Bhari and Paras Gudka.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Chess Association has once again put off the national championships scheduled for this weekend. KCA has failed to organise the past three editions of the national chess championships, which was last won by Peter Gilruth.
