Kenya Prisons and Kenya Pipeline won their third straight games against Varieties of Gabon and Algeria’s NCR respectively of the African Women Club championships, Saturday.
Prisons playing with their second string team against the underdogs Gabonese won in straight sets of 25-5, 25-7, 25-4 at the Africa Nazarene University.
David Lung’aho, Prison head coach pulled out his first choice team, replacing Captain Brackcedis Agala, Lydia Maiyo, Evelyn Makuto, Jane Wacu and Elizabeth Nafula.
Joyce Tarus who earned Prison seven points in her services in the second set which they won (25-7) warned that the team should not be carried away by the performance over Varieties as they have a tough game against FAP of Cameroon on Sunday.
Variety’s coach, Gilles Ndong who finished second in the Gabonese national league last year said his team had lost to a worthy opponent.
“This is our first appearance in these games and I think we did our best, playing against that Kenya team which is at another level in African volleyball,” noted Ndong who received a major blow in the tournament after her captain, Alicia Dokothee twisted her ankle in the second minute of the match.
Pipeline stopped the Algerian dominance over Kenya when they beat Algerian NRC by 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-20) in a late kick off played at Kasarani to register their second win. National setter, Jane Wanja told sportsnewsarena.com that they had to work extra hard to beat the determined Algerians.
"Our motto right now is to crush any team that come our way, we don't mind where it comes from Algeria or Uganda, but we feel good after beating a team from Algeria which has been dominating our meetings in the recent past,” said an elated Wanja ahead of their against Nkunda of Uganda.
Pipeline and Prisons now have one foot each in the quarters ahead of their final pool matches. After a day’s rest KCB will welcome Stef Auto in the group C match on Sunday.
In other matches, Blue Angels of Nigeria came from behind to beat Mafolofolo of Botswana 3-2 in a thrilling encounter played before a capacity crowd at the Nazarene university.
Mafolofolo were the first to register their name on the score board, winning the first set (31-29) but Austin Odumo’s side from the Bayelsa State in Nigeria boosted by their previous 3-0 (25-23, 25-21,25-15) win over DGSP on Monday seems to have learnt from their previous mistakes, when they took the second set 25-22.
They won the third set 25-21 with blue Angels won 25-19 before their 16-12 victory in the decider.
Water sport of Ethiopia who lost to Kenya Commercial Bank on Friday recovered from the setback when they thrashed Stellar clb of Ivory Coast 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-20) at Kasarani.
