The Kenya Golf Union will be sending a team of four and a coach/manager to the bi-annual Africa Amateur Golf Team championships in October at the Lake Club Benoni in Johannesburg, organised by hosts, South African Golf Association.
Kenya came second to South Africa in Cairo in 2009, and Vet Lab’s Borniface Simwa was second in the individual event, only one point behind South Africa’s JG Classen. Both have since turned professional.
Confirmed entries have been received from nine countries so far - Botswana, Reunion Island, Namibia, Tanzania, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Cote D’Ivoire, Kenya and South Africa. A total of 13 countries participated in Egypt, including north African states - Morocco and Libya.
Speaking to Sportsnewsareana, Bruce Yonge of the South African Golf Association said the y were expectin teams from 15 countries.
A World Amateur Golf ranking event, the 72 hole event has the support of the R&A. Using Eisenhower scoring, the best three scores will count towards the team score each round.
Teams are expected to arrive in Johannesburg on Sunday, 16 October for the official practice round at Lake Club Benoni on Monday, 17 October.
The first of four rounds will start on Tuesday, 18 October.
Priotr to that the Lake Club Benoni course will host the 2011 Ekurhuleni Open Strokeplay, a 72 hole regional championships that is also World ranked.
The hosts, who will have home advantage, have named the team that will defend the continental title South Africa won two years ago.
It includes C J du Plessis who was in the Zone VI team in Mombasa earlier this year. However, it seems that the South Africans are sending their strongest team to play in the Four Nations tournament in New Zealand in November, including two Springbok juniors who have won national events this year.
The Kenya golf union are expected to announce the team after the Karen Challenge on 11 September.
