Feb 19, 2012-

The Kenya Hockey Union, KHU has abandoned earlier plans to have a two-leg league format this season and instead announced they will stick to the current format of playing only one leg to determine the winners.

Vivien Agunda, the KHU secretary argued the two-leg format was too expensive for the Union who do not have a league sponsor. She said the league format will be the same as the two preceding seasons, contrary to earlier announcement by the Union’s vice chair, Elyna Shiveka's statement that the league will be a played on a home and away basis.

"A meeting held between clubs officials and the Union in January had requested the Union to restore the two-leg KHU league format, but the board of the Union analyzed the request and resolved that such a format would be expensive to the Kenya Hockey Union and the participating teams," reads part of the statement.

The KHU board argues that a two-leg format would mean that up-country teams would be required to make more trips to Nairobi to honor their fixtures yet already, the response from teams in terms of registration fee for the 2012 league season is poor - indicating that teams are undergoing financial difficulties.

Agunda added that the board will ensure there will be a lot of hockey activity taking place in the form of festivals and tournaments round the country, and throughout the year as this will guarantee teams the much needed exposure required by players ahead of any international championships.

Clubs had complained of the one-leg format which they argued did not give them sufficient playing time with some coaches further arguing that they cannot use the one tier league system to gauge their squads adding that the such a league restricts them to just 10 (or less) matches per season.

But Strathmore University hockey teams head coach, Meshack Senge who has been agitating for a two leg format told  sportsnewsarena.com on Saturday that the Union's about-turn has come as a surprise to the club, adding that he will have to evaluate the content of the circular sent to clubs by the union, together with his senior before making any decision.
