Sofapaka cashed in on AFC Leopards’ woes to climb to the top of the Kenyan Premier League for the first time this season with a deserved 2-0 win over hosts Muhoroni Youth.

Veteran striker John Baraza grabbed a brace to take his goals tally to 10 and in the process lift Sofapaka above Tusker and AFC Leopards with 29 points.

Reigning champions Tusker had provisionally gone top of the log on Friday evening with a 2-0 win over Chemelil Sugar at the Nyayo National Stadium courtesy of goals by Joseph Emeka and Obadiah Ndege.

But their stay at the summit lasted less than 24 hours as Sofapaka supplanted them with Saturday’s result.

Tusker have now dropped one place to second on the table with 28 points. Former league leaders Leopards, whose match against Sony Sugar was postponed for security reasons, are third with 27 points.

Gor Mahia 3 KCB 2

At the Nairobi City Stadium, Gor Mahia beat KCB 3-2 to string up their third consecutive win. George Midenyo opened the score sheets with a stunning 30 yard free kick in the 16th minute before Rama Salim weighed in with a second half brace for K’Ogalo.

But KCB weren’t going to take the beating lying down and almost clawed their way back into the game.

The bankers stage a late rally in the game with Paul Kiongera reducing the deficit with a 75th minute penalty before Gor ‘reject’ Ezekiel Odera got his pound of flesh from K’Ogalo in the closing stages of the match.

His thunderous drive from distance left Gor goalkeeper Fredick Onyango clutching straws. Rama, who is slowly but surely, establishing himself within Gor’s system, had another fruitful day on the field taking his goals tally to six.

Western Stima 0 Nairobi City Stars 0

In Kakamega, Nairobi City Stars’ revival continued after they came out of the dreaded Bukungu Stadium with a priceless 1-0 win over hosts Western Stima 1-0.

Levi Mwaka scored the all-important goal in the 45th minute before getting himself sent off later in the match for a second bookable offence.

Last weekend City Stars, who had spent many weeks at the basement, caused a major shock with a 3-0 drabbing of then leaders Leopards at the Nyayo Stadium.
