Strathmore University Girls recorded a slim win over United States International University USIU-A to win the University derby of the Kenya Hockey Union League at the City Park Stadium Friday.

The Mesharck Senge side who finished second behind Telkom Orange last year got the only goal of the match through former Merry Hill student, Damaris Namulanda in the 59th minute.

Regina Mwangi's started the move outside USIU's D, drove the ball past two defender, before releasing a cross that found Namulanda who connected the ball without any opposition from USIU defence beating goalkeeper, Caroline Ngarachu, to give her side all the three points.

Senge who will be meeting league leaders, Wazalendo in the men's premier league match on Sunday was however not impressed by his side's performance in their first national women's league match.

"We did not look sharp in the last minutes of the game but I think we will pick up our momentum on the coming matches. its good that we got the three points which is a good start for the season ," said the coach who has vowed to win double with the two sides this season.

Senge coaches both the Strathmore men and women teams.

Strathmore men's team lost seven players last season but Senge believes his latest inclusion who include Constant Wahura, Hillary Soita, Lewis Mawira, Everson Alulu and Edgar Wekesa can do the job over Wazalendo.

"When you lose seven players it dents you a little bit but the new players are up to the task," added Senge.

USIU-A, women who played the match with six new players has an uphill tusk on Sunday when they face champions Orange who are top of the table but the captain of the side believe they can pull a surprise when the two sides meet.

"We lost today's match (Friday) but the lose will have no effect whatsoever when we meet Orange, in fact it is like a wake up call to the team.

Orange is a stronger side but we'll have to put our heads together, work as a team and fight for the win," said right back, Miriam Muhia, the USIU captain.

Parkland Sports Club and Kenya Polytechnic treated fans to some good hockey in the mid morning chilly weather at the City Park Stadium in a match which ended 2-2.

Parkland were the first to score from a short corner called with a few seconds to the hooter, through Erick Odendo who did not wast any chance, converting the deflection to take the game one up for Parklands.

After resumption, Gideon Kimuge equalized for Poly in the 42nd minute but Fredrick Okeyo restored Parkland's lead eight minutes later.

The game was headed Parkland's way until the 69th minute when Kimuge got a lose ball inside Parkland's box to fire home with only 30 second left and the time was not even enough for celebration when umpire, James Mwangi blew the whistle to end the match 2-2.
