• Ten Kenyan athletes qualify for London Paralympic Games

Ten Kenyan athletes have qualified for the 2012 Paralympic games. They attained qualification marks at this year’s International Paralympic Committee World championships which ended on Sunday in Christchurch New Zealand.  

Kenya won a total of eight medals to finish fourth in Africa and 21st overall out of the 78 nations that participated.  

All the medalists qualified for the Paralympic games. The modest team comprising 11 athletes, three guides and six officials arrived home on Monday to a rousing welcome an improvement from their unannounced departure two weeks ago.

Abraham Tarbei the world record holder and defending champion clinched Kenya’s only gold medal at the event in the 5000m T46 which was also the first championship medal. He also won a bronze medal in the 1500m T46 as did  Emmanuel Cheruiyot in the 5000m T12 and Mary Nakhumicha in javelin. Nakumicha will also represent the country in Shot Put and discuss at the Paralympics in London.

Kenya bagged 4 silver medals, two from Henry Kirwa in the 1500m and 5000m T12,Samuel Mushai in the 1500m T11 and Francis Thuo in the 5000m T11.  

Next on the paralympics calender is the International Blind Sports Association IBSA athletics championships to be held in Turkey in April where more Kenyan athletes will seek qualification to next year's Paralympic games.
