With the start of the Junior golf season last week at Sigona golf club, the country’s first junior golfers notched up valuable World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points after the inaugural Sigona Junior Open.
Played over 54 holes the winner, Sigona’s Amin Hashim and runner up Quram Bhatti from Royal Nairobi earned their first WAGR points placing them 4845 and 4956 in the world respectively. This week, the annual 72 holes Boys and Girls championships, also a World Amateur ranked event concludes Thursday at Muthaiga Golf Club and new names may make their way to the WAGR next week.
In a bold move, the Junior Golf Foundation applied for World Golf Rankings for all their sanctioned events, which will continue next week with the Junior Matchplay championships for the R&A Quaich at Sigona Golf club. After the August holidays therefore, the Junior golfers will probably rise in rankings above the country’s national players who have only had one WAGR event in this year’s calender.
Meanwhile, three elite Kenyan amateurs play in the Southern Cape Open championships from Friday (12 August) at Knysna Golf Club, South Africa, a World ranking event.
The three are Vet Lab’s Robinson Owiti, who won a ticket to South Africa at the Limuru Open,Junior international Mohit Mediratta, who is based in the Western Cape and Top ranked Stefan Engell Andersen, now 481 in WAGR this week, got exemption to play in Knysna.
