A glittering collection of the world's greatest sports stars including Kenya’s double world champion Vivian Cheruiyot have just hours to wait to discover if they are winners of Laureus World Sports Awards.

Cheruiyot is among six athletes nominated for Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year after her 5,000 and 10,000 metres double in Daegu. The awards will be held in London on Monday, February 6.

Besides the gold medal from Daegu, Cheruiyot also won the World Cross-Country Championship in Punta Umbria in Spain achievements that saw her crowned as Kenya Sports Personality of the Year 2011 and the Best female sportswoman of the Year at the annual Awards held last December.

Legendary athletes Kipchoge Keino an IOC member who is also a Laureus Academy member and former long distance ace Tegla Loroupe are among the invitees for the awards.

The other nominees for the Laureus sportswoman award include Homare Sawa who captained Japan to its first ever FIFA Women's World Cup with victory over the United States and was also awarded the Golden Boot for being the tournament's leading scorer, with five goals, and the Golden Ball for being the top player, Golfer Yani Tseng from Taiwan , who at 22, has ten wins, including two Major Championships - the Wegmans LPGA Championship and the Ricoh British Open.

Others are 100m World champion Carmelita Jeter who was also part of the triumphant Jamaican 4 by 100m team,Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and Winter sports great Maria Höfl-Riesch(Alpine Skier.

World tennis No 1, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, fresh from his brilliant Australian Open win in Melbourne at the weekend, is hoping to climax a remarkable 12 months by winning the Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award for the first time.

One of his biggest rivals will be Argentina's charismatic football star Lionel Messi, who has also been nominated for the Sportsman Award for the third straight time, while his team FC Barcelona are also on the shortlist as Laureus World Team of the Year for the fourth time. 

Jamaica sprint star Usain Bolt, twice previously winner of the Laureus Sportsman Award is nominated again, Basketball star Dirk Nowitzki, Cyclist Cadel Evans and Formula one champion Sebastien Vettel make up the six shortlisted for the awards.

The Laureus World Sports Awards is recognized as the premier honours event in the international sporting calendar and the Awards Ceremony provides a high profile focus as stars of the sporting world come together to salute the finest sportsmen and sportswomen of the year.

The winners, are voted by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the ultimate sports jury, made up of 47 of the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen of all time.
