• Wachania lifts CHESSPAK Cup

Wachira Wachania ploughed through a strong field to lift the CHESSPAK Cup at Nairobi’s Bowling Green over the weekend after posting a score of 5.5points out of a possible 7.

Wachania popularly known as 'Farmer'-an international chess title of Candidate Master (CM) edged out some seasoned chess players that included Kenya’s best player Peter Gilruth who finished joint fourth with 4.5 points.

In joint second with five points were Wang’ombe Mugo and Austin Okeyo respectively. Sharing fourth was newcomer Joseph Maigua.Okeyo upset Kenyan ‘top dog’ Wang’ombe Mugo and tournament favourite Peter Gilruth in consecutive rounds. He lost the last round game to eventual winner Wachania thus settling for joint second.

A special prize for the juniors category was awarded to Sathya Iyer of Oshwal Academy ,Nairobi . The 12 yr old Sathya bettered his performance after finishing second in the same category in the previous weekend’s Festival of Friendship.

 The next events on the calendar are Fizza Gorilla Blitz qualifiers on June 19 and CHESSPAK Rapid on July 3, which will both be held at the Bowling Green.
