• Angola stun Germany at B.ball Worlds,through to last 16

Angola booked their place in the last 16 of the World Basketball championships with a historical and stunning 92-88 overtime win over Germany, on Wednesday.

Germany, who had earlier beaten Serbia, crushed out of the ongoing event in Turkey after the loss. Serbia beat Angola by 50 points in the group matches.

The Angolans, who have dominated continental men’s basketball in the recent past also qualified for the last 16 four years ago .

The Germans dominated the beginning of the first quarter, with a 15-8 but Angola reacted with an 8-0 run to get up 16-15 and the first ten minutes finished tied at 19.

In the second quarter veteran Miguel Lutonda led Angola with 8 points, including a three pointer to recover the lead and finished the first half up 40-35.

Angola controlled most of the third quarter but the Germany run started in the final. The Angolan team finished down 58-54.

Then in the final quarter Germany made a 8-0 run in the first two minutes to take a 62-58 lead. Angola never gave up and after being down by four; Felizardo Ambrosio banked a three pointer.

The African team used their defense, which sparked their fast offense and took control of the game early in the overtime period. Free throws by Olimpio Cipriano and Felizardo Ambrosio sealed the game for the Angolans.

Cipriano poured in 30 points and fellow forward Joaquim Gomez added 16 to go with 14 rebounds as Angola sank an impressive 18 three-pointers from 40 attempts.

Angola is now closer to getting into the next round for the first time with a 2-2 record as they will face Australia to finish the preliminary round on Thursday.

Favourites USA maintained their unbeaten run in the event with a convincing 88-51 win over Iran.

The second African team Ivory Coast crushed out of th event after their fourth los of 97-60 to Greece. 

Serbia also sealed a berth in the last 16 with an 88-51 victory over Australia as the defending champions Spain avoided an early exit with a 91-57 win over Lebanon.

Lithuania and hosts Turkey also qualified for the last 16 of the 24-team event with wins of 69-55 win over France and 79-77 against Puerto Rico respectively.
