Aug 10, 2010-

Its all systems go at the lakeside city of Kisumu as the National Secondary Schools Term II ball games kick off on Tuesday. As excepted, football takes the centre stage of the 5-day competition which will be held concurrently at the Kisumu Polytechnic and the Moi Stadium.

Surprisingly, the Provincial championships produced a number of upsets and the match up debutants and seasoned challengers will make for an intriguing competition in the Boys category.

The return of Jamhuri High after 32 years in the absence of 2009 champions Kapenguria High and Thurgem from Nyanza, however tips the scale in favour of the Nairobi's representatives and perennial campaigners Kakamega High from Western.

The two have been drawn together in Pool A and will meet on Day 1 in what promises be an epic clash. The other two team in this pool St. Marks from Nyanza and Isiolo High are expected to pick the wooden spoon in the group.

Pool B appears to be a more balance draw, although the favourite's tag goes to Rift Valley's Laiser Hill Academy and Waa High School from Coast Province. The other two teams that make up this Pool are Mandera Boys (North Eastern) and Tetu Boys (Central).

The Boys' soccer has over the years proved to be the cradle of youthful talent. Kenyan professionals Dennis Oliech (AJ Auxxere), MacDonald Mariga (Inter Milan) and former skipper Musa Otieno (Cape own Santos) were all discovered in these games before making a name for themselves at the national and international level.

As in Boys soccer, the same applies in the Girls category where the defending champions, Nairobi's St. Teresa's are missing after falling at the provincial stage.Rift Valley champions Bishop Muge Girls and former champions Archbishop Njenga will definitely challenge for top honours. The two are drawn in Pool B together with Matuu Girls from Eastern and Central Province flag bearers Gataragwa. Pool A comprises Shimba Girls from Coast, newcomers-New Jogoo Girls from Nairobi, North Eastern's Abusalama and Sega Girls from Nyanza.

Action in volleyball also promises to be equally stiff. Cheptil Boys from Rift Valley will be seeking to retain their title, but they will have ward off other two championship hopefuls, Malava Boys and Nyanza's Ambira Boys.

In the girls’ category, five time champions Lugulu girls and the perennial nemesis Mukumu Girls are both missing. This leaves the door wide open for schools like Malava Girls (Western), Buruburu Girls (Nairobi) and Weaver Bird from the Rift valley, who have eternally been overshadowed by the former two, to slug it out for the much coveted title.

The competition runs till August 8th with winners booking places in the East Africa Secondary School Games slated for Nakuru later in the month.
