• NCC wire Stima to extend lead

Nairobi Chess Club hit Stima 3 -1 over the weekend to extend their lead in the national chess league at Goan Gymkhana. 

On board 1 Peter Gilruth of NCC wrong-footed Ricky Sang in a drawn ending while Mehul Gohil easily beat erratic Akello Atwoli on board 2.

Stima saved face on board 3 with a win from Geoffrey Wenani.

UoN drubbed Kenya Poly 4 – 0 with wins from James Muchai, Duncan Anangwe, and Robert King’oo at the same venue. 

At the KCB Sports ground,Ruaraka, Checkmates edged University of Nairobi  2.5 – 1.5 with wins coming from Collins Young and Douglas Kuritto playing against Duncan Anangwe and Brian Inima respectively.

Martin Oyamo had to use all his experience to force a draw against varsity lad James Muchai as UoN‘s Robert Kingoo got a bye on board 4.

In another match KCB’s Ben Nguku, Mathew Kanegeni ,Githinji Hinga and Philip Singe blew away Kenya Poly’s Geoff Cheruyou, Douglas Kamau, George Gitonga and Ibrahim Pema.

Kenyatta University also recorded a 4 – 0 win against UoN ladies team with wins from Jackton Mony, Victor Hongo, Paul Waweru and Elijah Kamau.

The varsity team also fell 3 -1 to Eastlands’  George Ochieng, Brian Adorwa and Martin Mbuya Paul Waweru secured KU’s consolation win against Brian Mmata.

Meanwhile, 20 junior players are in Halkidiki, Greece participating in World Youth chess championships. The event runs from October 20th -30th. One of Kenya’s star performers includes 8 yr old Iyehgar Sharanya who has so far scored 4 wins-2 losses.
