Chess bear Martin Gateri emerged from hibernation to maul Mehul ‘Gorilla’ Gohil 7-5 to clinch the national blitz chess title over the weekend at Tamu Restaurant, Nairobi.

Gohil started well with a 3-1 lead by the first time out, but Gateri held his nerve to keep the deficit down finishing the second session with a 5-3 Gohil lead.

The super cool FIDE Master took command of the final session dethroning the year-long champion in the last game of the contest.

In the ongoing national league, current leaders KCB overcame a strong resistance from Nairobi Chess Club winning 2.5-1.5 at the Goan Gymkhana.

On the top board reigning national champion, NCC’s Peter Gilruth had to settle for a draw after missing a checkmate against former champion Ben Magana of KCB.

On board 2, Gohil had a consolation win following his blitz title loss when he came from down to beat Matthew Kanegeni in a brave kingside attack.

On the third board, NCC’s John Hadley lost to Githinji Hinga after blundering away his queen in a drawish end game.

Phillip Singe banked KCB’s other point when he jogged to victory against Jules Cerera.

In other league matches, Eastlands held NCC 2 -2 with wins coming from Brian Adorwa (B3) and Martin Mbuya(B4) while Peter Gilruth(B1) and Mehul Gohil (B2) won for NCC. League leaders KCB swept away a hapless University of Nairobi 4-0.
