Jan 05, 2011-The national men’s hockey team will be whittled down to 25 players from the current 34 after a few training sessions at the City Park Stadium.  Teddy Jhite, the KHU Convenor of coaching and development committee said training resumes on January 15 and 16.

All the players shortlisted are expected to report for the two sessions at the City Park Stadium.  The national team does not have any pressing engagements but KHU is ensuring that there is ‘some’ team. Later this year, Kenya will have to compete in the Olympic qualifiers. The dates have not been set by the Africa Hockey bosses.

In his communication to club officials, Jhite said dedication by the players was required as one of the criteria for selection.

According to the provisional list, players have been drawn from diverse clubs playing in the premier and national leagues. As expected, the bulk of the players are from current champions Strathmore University.

Meshack Senge, the Strathmore University coach who recently took the varsity lads for club championships in Ghana noted there was just a small gap between Kenya and other teams from the continent with the exception of South Africa. The former Armed Forces and national team player hinted that with consistency and more exposure, Kenyan teams could be on level terms in the near future.

In the provisional squad of 34, Strathmore University has 10 players which is a pointer to the youthful nature and future of the Kenya team.
