Black Mamba and National Youth Service teams are the Madaraka cup handball champions.
Black Mambas defeated NYS in the men’s final 38-19 while NYS netted 18 goals against their rivals St. John’s16 to win the ladies cup.
NYS required the services of Doreen Aboso in the penalty shootout to lift the title for the first time in history.
The thrilling match between NYS and St. Johns was very competitive with both teams tying 14 up in the regular time to take the game into extra time.
Jasmine Nasimiyi was the first to score for the relatively younger side, St. John before Aboso replied with a penalty after Leah Njogu was felled in the D-area by Janet Awuor just two minutes into the extra time.
The two teams again tied 16-16 at the end of the extra time. Nasimiyu, Janet Awuor and Joyce Wanjiku’s efforts being saved by NYS goalkeeper Judy Ndegwa who was outstanding in the post.
Nasimiyu scored six goals for St. John while Aboso who scored the decider in the final minute netted a total of seven to finish the top scorer.
Allan Odhiambo and Augustine Okello scored eight each for Black Mambas while John Kuria netted seven for NYS.
Nairobi handball Secretary Jack Ochieng who is also the national handball mens coach told sportsnewsarena.com that the national team will start their training for the forthcoming All Africa Games in two weeks time at Nyayo.
