Gambits Maul the Lion Kings

Nairobi Gambits quartet of Ricky Sang, Akello Atwoli, George Mathea and Mike Rua overcame stiff opposition to silence the Lion Kings’ Ben Nguku, Githinji Hinga, Austin Okeyo and George Otieno 3-1 in the decisive game of the Nairobi Chess League. The Gambits had earlier beaten Safaricom’s Wachira Wachania, Wang’ombe Mugo and Anthony Ochieng by the same margin boosting their chances of lifting this years mini-league.

Elsewhere Mehul Gohil bagged five out of six points to emerge the overall winner in the chess category of the Festival of Friendship held last weekend at the Nairobi Premier Club. He was closely followed by clubmate Jules Cerera while in under 14 category was won by Sita Shah with Sathya Iyer placing second. 

Meanwhile Checkmates Chess Club hosts a seven-round long play tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Nairobi’s Bowling Green Restaurant. 

The tourney will be an open competition using Swiss pairing system where every player gets to play all rounds.

There will be several seniors, ladies and junior prizes(various ages) in the tourney held to celebrate the new Chessplayers Association of Kenya (CHESSPAK).
