Gor Mahia fans breathed a huge sigh of relief after the team awoke from a deep slumber to snap a winless streak stretching eight matches in the Kenyan Premier League.

At the Nyayo National Stadium, Tusker wasted an opportunity to stay in touch with league leaders while City Stars contrived a barren draw against Ulinzi Stars but still remained rooted at the bottom of the table.

Gor Mahia 1 Sofapaka 0

Rama Salim’s disputed spot kick in the 41st minute after Eugene Asike handled in the box at a rain swept Nairobi City Stadium was all that the limping K’Ogalo needed to register their second win in 10 matches.

Prior to the match, Gor had sunk to 15th place with just seven points and sense of expectation was palpable amongst thousands of the club fans who braved a rainy afternoon to watch the match.

The mach began on a high tempo with K’Ogalo firing the first warning in the 12th minute with a rasping free kick from Victor Ali, which Sofapaka goalkeeper Duncan Ochieng did well to parry out of play.

Two minutes later, George Midenyo failed to make contact with Musa Mohamed’s low cross inside the box. Gor were almost caught napping in the 38th minute, in a quick counter attack but Humphrey Mieno couldn’t keep his attempted lob low enough.

The entire second was an all Sofapaka affair with Gor goalkeeper, Fredrick Onyango, being called into action time and again as Sofapaka laid serge on their opponents goalmouth.

Gor’s previous, and only win, before the match was a 2-0 defeat of Thika United on the league opening weekend. During that dry spell, Gor only managed 4 goals, while shipping in seven.

Gor now moves to 10th with 10 points.

Tusker 2 Mathare United 2

Reigning champions collapsed in the last 20 minutes when they were in a control against Mather United, letting a two-goal lead slip through their fingers to settle for a 2-2 draw.

The Slum Boys came back from the dead courtesy of late strikes by Andrew Tololwa (69th minute) and Anthony Kimani (87th minute).

At half time Tusker were cruising with goals from Kenneth Wendo and Paul Were before the half hour mark. But Sammy Omollo’s men will rue their complacency in the closing stages that cost them victory.

City Stars 0 Ulinzi Stars 0

In an earlier match at the same venue, City Stars frustrated all efforts by Ulinzi Stars in a match that ended scoreless. Ulinzi moves to ninth on the log with 12 points while City Stars stay bottom with 7points from 10 matches.

Chemelil Sugar 1 KCB 0

In Chemelil, Mohammed Kassim’s 48th minute strike gave the home side a solitary goal win over KCB. The win lifted the sugar millers one place to fourth while KCB are tenth with 11 points.
