Gor Mahia moved one stepper closer to a successful title defence of the GOTV Shield with a 2-0 victory in a pre-quarter finals match at City Stadium on Sunday.

On-loan former Kenyan international winger Patrick Obaya and Sserunkuma struck two quick fire goals shortly after the break to secure K’Ogalo’s passage to the quarter finals.

In an earlier match at the same venue, former AFC Leopards coach Jan Koops made a not so memorable return to Kenyan Premier League after City Stars fell to a 1-0 loss to Sofapaka in his first match in charge of the Kawangare based side.

The scrappy affair was settled late in the second half by Sofapaka skipper James Situma who popped up in the box to strike from close range.

Sofapaka dominated the contest and should have won by a wider margin if not for their wastefulness.

In Naivasha, Karuturi Sports ousted Nationwide league side Kariobangi Sharks 5-3 on post-match penalties after the two team settled for a 1-1 stalemate in regulation time.

But following the Westgate Mall terrorist attack on Saturday, a somber mood engulfed all the three matche venues.

A minute’s silence was observed in honour of the victims before kickoff in all three matches and players also wore black arm bands.

Mathare United, Sony Sugar, AFC Leopards, Western Stima and sole Nationwide league survivors Finlay booked their places in the last eight with victories in their respective matches on Saturday. The weekend matches were, however, marked by low score lines with only six goals being scored in open play in the eight fixtures.

Mathare United, Western Stima, Finlay and Karuturi Sports all booked their place in the last eight through penalty shoot outs.

Saturday: Chemelil Sugar 0 AFC Leopards 1, Tusker 0 Sony Sugar 1, Mathare United 8 Ulinzi Stars 7 (penalties), Bandari 3 Finlays 4 (penalties), Western Stima 4 Homeboyz 3 (penalties) Sunday: Sofapaka 1 City Stars 0, Gor Mahia 2 Thika United, Karuturi Sports 5 Kariobangi Sharks 3 (penalties)
