Former national champions St Anthony’s will represent Nzoia Region in the boy’s football at the Airtel Rising Stars Secondary Schools National Term Two B games which kick off in Machakos on Tuesday morning.

St. Anthony’s qualified for the finals after beating Kakamega High’s Green Commandos 1-0 in a replay of the Nzoia regional final in Machakos.

The game was replayed after St Anthony’s appealed to the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA). Kakamega had been awarded their aborted final match played in Busia early this month.

The highly-contested boy’s football final in Busia County early this month, was abandoned in the 72nd minute, after a section of fans roughed up match officials for awarding Kakamega a controversial goal.

A committee formed to look into the match found out that Kakamega were the bona fide Nzioa region boy’s football champions and awarded the match. But, St. Anthony’s appealed and an appeal committee ruled that the match be replayed.

Jonathan Lokadet scored the lone goal in the fifth minute with a fierce shot that beat Kakamega keeper Edwin Mukolwe.

Green Commandoes who had arrived in Machakos last week with a hope of reclaiming the title will now have to make a journey back to Kakamega as St. Anthony’s who arrived in Machakos on Sunday after the ruling by KSSSA will remain in search of another title.

St Anthony’s coach Peter Mayoyo was happy with the decision to have the match replayed adding that justice has been served. “We have finally seen justice. We knew we will win and now that we have won we are looking at nothing short of reclaiming the title,” Mayoyo said.

St. Anthony’s will now join Lake Region representative and defending champions Kisumu Day, Highlands region champions Kathungi and Upper Hill. Kathungi lost to Upper Hill in the finals in Embu in 2013.

Former national schools football champions Upper Hill were given a lifeline to compete in this year’s Airtel Rising Stars National Secondary Schools Term 2B games after the Northern region failed to raise a team.

By Saturday, Northern region had not named the region’s representative for boys’ soccer to Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA). As a result, Upper Hill who lost to Laiser Hill in the Metropolitan games were drafted in.

“We are still waiting for the qualifier from Northern region. If we don’t get any word from them by Sunday afternoon we will have no option but to look for a replacement. We have already asked Upper Hill to be on the standby,” KSSSA executive member Bashir Abdikardir confirmed.

Upper Hill have been placed in Pool A which has St. Anthony's and Kisumu Day. The pool also has Highlands region champions Kathungi. Kathungi lost to Upper Hill in the finals in Embu in 2013.

Pool B sees debutants and Metropolitan region representative Laiser Hill battle it out with Coast Region’s Waa Boys, Mau’s Simotwo and Passenga from Aberdare region.

In the girl’s football, Pool A will see 2013 national champions Olympic Girls take on last year’s finalists St Johns Kaloleni (Coast), debutants Kirigara (Highland) and Wiyeta (Nzoia). Wiyeta qualified after beating defending champions Butere Girls in the Nzoia finals in Busia.

Pool B will have Kikima Girls (Metropolitan), Nginda (Aberdare), Eburu (Mau), and Kobala (Lake).

In boys’ volleyball, Malava who will be eyeing a seventh national title and are in pool A alongside Tetu Boys of Aberdare, Ngungani of Highlands and Mivumoni of Coast. In the girls contest 22-time national champions Lugulu are in pool A together with Lake Region champions Sega Girls’ and St John’s from Coast.

In Pool 'B', seasoned challengers AIC Kosirai (Mau) will tackle Gakanga High (Highlands), Tetu High (Aberdares) and a yet to be identified team from the Northern Region
