Captain Abraham tendros scored a 73rd minute penalty to give hosts Eritrea a narrow win over a hard fighting Rwanda in the first semi final match of the Cecafa Under-20 football tournament in Asmara on Wednesday.

Zanzibar referee Waziri Sheha awarded the kick after Rwanda defender Rusheshangoga Michel handled from the goal-line after his goalkeeper Marcel Nzarora had been beaten.

Eritrea will play Saturday’s final against the winner of the Uganda vs Kenya tie.

Rwanda, the clear underdogs played strong giving the hosts as much as they received. But they must also thank their goalkeeper who made several daring saves that could have killed this match as early as the first half.

Such chances came in the 27th, 33rd and 45th minutes as the capacity crowd cried for the opener.

Rwanda’s best chance came in the 59th minute when Faustin Usengimana was denied by goalkeeper Samuel Alazar.

Rwanda’s biggest undoing was poor finishing with striker Songa Isaie unable to cope with the workload.

Rwanda is fielding an Under-17 side as part of their preparations towards hosting the African Under-17 tournament in January.

“We have proved our worth in this tournament and gained a lot of experience as we continue to build our team,” he told the post match press conference.

Negash Teklit, the Eritrean tactician says he is set for any team, Kenya or Uganda.

“We have come from very far and we shall not be looking back, come Saturday,” he said.
