Jow and Ommala steer Telkom Orange to final

  • Betsy Ommalla scored one goal for Telkom Orange who face Ghana Police in the final of the Africa Hockey Club championship.

Two first half goals by Jackline Mwangi and captain Betsy Ommala against Ghana Revenue Authority saw Tekom Orange book a date with Ghana Police in the final of the Africa Hockey Club championship which ends at the weekend in Lusaka, Zambia.

Telkom Orange coach Jos Openda made changes in his squad. One notable change was repalcing regular keeper Ruth Njoki with Josephine Staro who came out of returement for the championship.

The defending champions took the lead in the fourth minute when Wangeci slotted a penalty corner. The goal seemed to have energized the defending champions and 12 minutes later, they made it 2-0 with another penalty corner by the skipper Ommala who beat GRA keeper Grace Mensah.

“The team played well and to the game plan and we are happy to have made it to another final. We look forward to have another resounding finish come on Saturday,” Openda said.

Openda said it was encouraging to see the team reach the final after a poor start when they were held by Ghana Police to a 3-3 draw.

“The team has showed hunger to win by the way they have recovered from the first draw. This was a big game and we are happy that we have managed to get to the final,” he said.

Ghana Police booked a place in the final after beating Egypt’s Sharkia 6-1. Ghanaian international Martha Sarfoa was the heroine for set the West African side on their way to a comfortable win with a hat trick. The other goals came from Faustina Aggrey, Linda Sasu and Nafisatu Umaru. 

Mariam Ahmed scored a consolation field goal for the Egyptian side three minutes to the end.
