Kenya dictate pace at CANA championship

Kenya collected 19 more medals on the second day of the African Swimming Confederation (CANA) Zone III and IV championship at the Kampala Parents swimming pool in Kololo.

Of the 19 medals, six were gold, nine silver and four bronze.

The gold medal winners were Rosafio Matteo who led a 1-2 finish in the boy’s 13-14 years 200 meters freestyle. Matteo clocked 2:10.40 ahead of teammate Nation Thorpe who was timed at 2:12.00.

Danielle Awori and Emily Muteti won gold and bronze in the girl’s 15-16 years 200m freestyle. Awori touched the pads at 1:13.70 ahead of Melodie Naidoo from Mauritius on 2:14.80. Muteti who starred at the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association games in Mombasa came in third on 2:15.80.

Muteti got her second medal when she led a one-two Kenya finish in the girl’s 15-16 years 50m butterfly clocking 29:90 ahead of Ger Ogot who finished second on 30.70. South Africa’s Jack Khanya was third touching the pads at 30:80.

Marina Kimani was another gold medal winner for Kenya in the boy’s 15-16 years 200m freestyle where he stopped the clock at 1:59.30. Christian Jacobsz from South Africa and Darren Minnie finished second and third.

After the second day, Kenya led the championship with a combined total of 1323 points ahead of South Africa on 1131 and Angola with 1090. The men’s team had a total of 762 points with Angola second on 590 and South Africa third with 575.

Kenya’s women narrowly led South Africa. They had 561 points while South Africa and Mauritius tied on 555.5 points.
