Kenya qualified to the semi final of the World Rugby Sevens Series by beating Samoa 19-5 at the Sam Boyd stadium on Sunday morning.

In a changed line up which saw coach Felix Ochieng start up with Bush Mwale instead of the much more experienced Patrice Agunda, Kenya had an early scare when Daniel Sikuta and Lafaele Tiliu Vaa faced off with Sikuta emerging with the ball which saw Michael Wanjala score the first try.

It was scored after a penalty awarded by the referee Ben Cruse from South Africa for a high tackle. Wanjala quickly scratched the ball and went over. Lavin Asego converted for a 7-0 lead. After the try, Samoa came back with vengeance but their fire was extinguished by Kenya.

From a Kenya offensive, Lavin Asego cross kicked but Billy Odhiambo was unable to chase and the ball went out for a line out. It was from this line out that Samoa caught the Kenya defence napping and Samoa Toloa scored for Samoa.

In the second half, Kenya gave the ball away from the kick off when Sikuta was called in front of the kicker. But, Asego redeemed himself with a steal to score under the posts and convert for Kenya to lead 14-5. Kenya could have put the game to an early bed when Oscar powered his way through but was stopped short of the line.

Kenya were then awarded a penalty and Andrew Amonde went in but lost the ball in contact and was immediately subbed. Then, Kenya scored the third try when Agunda caught the ball from the back of the line-out and Asego delivered a long pass to Billy Odhiambo who went over unchallenged.

Earlier, Brazil bowed out of the competition after being beaten 26-19 by Portugal in the Shield semis. Japan rallied back in the second half but were unable to surge past Wales who won 42-33. Portugal and Japan meet in the Shield semis.
