Kenya makes usual clean sweep at African Cross Country

Just like in the previous three editions, Kenyan runners made a clean sweep of all the titles at the fourth African Cross Country Championships held on Saturday in Yaounde Cameroon. .

Kenya produced a perfect 1-2-3 finish in both junior races as well as the women’s senior 10km with Uganda’s Philip Kipyego denying the neighbouring runners the planned sweep.

Kenya have dominated the previous editions in 2011, 2012 and 2014 sneaking in for silver in the men’s senior race.

Africa games 10 000m champion Alice Aprot who has her eyes set on a ticket for Rio, carried on her dominating performance this season winning in 29:52 leading compatriots Sheila Chepkirui and Beatrice Mutai to the podium sweep.

But the men’s race was a nervy one for Kenyans as James Rungaru just managed to outsprint a resolute Kipyego in the home stretch to ensure the country's runners sweep the individual and team titles in the central African nation.

Rungaru clocked 26.34 just a second ahead of the Ugandan with Kenyan’s Charles Mneria, Clephas Ng’etich, Geoffrey Kimutai rounding off the top five positions.

Isaac Kipsang and Mirriam Cherop led the medal haul in the men’s junior 8km and women’s 6km respectively.

The triumphant Kenyan team returns home on Sunday afternoon.
