Kenya women’s team regained some pride on Wednesday with a tensed 64-63 win over Cape Verde in their final pool B match at the Africa Cup of Nations in Maputo, Mozambique.

Both teams however had already been locked out of the quarters from their pool which had Angola, Cameroon, Mali and Nigeria through to the next round.

Kenya trailed 40-39 going into the decider after a sizzling three quarters, which saw Hilda Luvandwa grab 27 points the highest of the close encounter.

But the Kenyans outgunned the Islanders by half a basket in an entertaining overtime of 11-10 after drawing 53-53 at regular time.

Silalei Shani with 15 points and 10 rebounds the best figures for the team and Purity Auma’s 11 were the other double digits for the Kenyan side who will now seek redemption in the qualification matches.

Kenya managed to finish fifth of the six pool table.

Vandell Andrade was strong through the quarters and her contribution of 21 points and 10 rebounds was the highest for the Cape Verdean’s.

Kenya whose ordinary shooting and poor ball control again came to fore in the first half will now face qualification matches against Algeria and Zimbabwe who also missed qualification from group A.

The days highlight was the sold out match between favourites Mozambique and fancied Senegal which the hosts won 77-61 a preliminary that could likely play out again in the final. Defending champions Angola are also likely contenders for Sunday’s final.

Rallied on by a fanatic 5 000 crowd who jammed the Pavilhao do Maxaquene stadium, Mozambique who trailed 32-33 at halftime perched top of group A.

Egypt made another land-mark as it booked it place in the quarter-final with a 72-62 points win over Algeria.
