Brayan Kiplimo’s scored two goals for Kenyatta University against Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology to clinch the men’s hockey title in the East Africa University games on Tuesday.
This was the first ever hockey title for the Thika Road-based which saw them overcome their rivals in a tense final which saw the umpires caution players from both teams severally.
As expected, the match lived to its top billing. Kenyatta University barely gave the hosts time to settle and in the first minute, Kiplimo scored the opening goal after deflecting a pin-point pass from his defender Job Simiyu who had dribbled past his markers on the right.
Kenyatta University who reached the final after beating University of Eldoret in the semi final missed the services of their skipper Lawrence Makhatsa due to indiscipline. But, the absence of the inspirational Makhatsa fired them up.
They combined well and attacked relentlessly with a soid mid-field marshalled by Moses Omamo.
After soaking up pressure from their rivals, the hosts settled and dictated place in the closing minutes of the first half although Calvins Kanu, a national team player was kept at bay by Kenyatta University’s shot stopper Robby Moturi.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 40th minute when Kenyan International midfielder Victor Osiche set up Kanu with a killer pass to beat on form goalkeeper Moturi.
The star studded JKUAT pressed on when midfielder Isaac Nandukule dribbled on the right and beat a solid Kenyatta University backline marshalled by Oliver Cheloti but the effort was not fruitful.
Temperes flared as the game progressed and many players, among them Muturi were cautioned by the umpires.
When the tempers cooled, Kiplimo scored his second goal in the 52nd minute after another pass from Simiyu who found a way of unlocking the JKUAT defense which was marshalled by Bobin Odekeyo. The goal was worth its weight in gold.
