Kenya is likely to host the Africa Rugby Confederation (CAR) Women’s Sevens tournament in April in Machakos.

The tournament has been switched from Morocco. Tunisia hosted the last edition which South won by beating Tunisia in the final. Uganda was third and Kenya finished fourth.

Kenya got the hosting rights following a successful petition arguing that the tournament be rotated among top countries. Manipulation by CAR had Morocco squeezed in as hosts although they are not among the top eight countries.

Uganda hosted CAR (South) tournament in 2006 and 2007 as well as a combined North and South divisions 2008. It doubled up as World Cup qualifiers. Botswana hosted the CAR (South) in 2011.

Among the North African countries, Tunisia were hosts in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010. Senegal were hosts in 2011. In 2013, North and South combined with Tunisia as hosts. This year’s tournament will also be combined thus locking out deserving countries like Rwanda, Egypt and Botswana who last played in 2011.

Deserving Zambia out

Madagascar also played in 2011. Zambia, one of the deserving countries has been locked out, their place possibly taken by Morocco which is not among the top eight countries.

Although the official announcement is yet to come from the Kenya Rugby Football Union, can reliably confirm the tournament will be staged in Machakos. In the recent past, Machakos hosted some matches of the Confederation of East and Central Africa Senior Challenge soccer tournament.

Also, Machakos has popularized the pre-season Masaku Sevens and a transition to a eight-team event should not be a problem.

Countries expected to be in Machakos are Senegal, South Africa, Namibia, Tunisia, Morocco, Uganda and Zimbabwe. But Kenya should also have a standby side incase one of the teams fails to travel to Kenya.

Kenya’s last outing was in Dubai where the team reached the semi finals after playing in the final the previous year. In March, the women’s team may travel to Hong Kong Sevens.
