Leonard Mugaisi, who plays at wing for Homeboyz RFC scored twice as Tusker Simba upset Eastern Province Kings 17-10 at City Park, Came Town at the start of this year’s Vodacom Cup.

The win was a dream start for Tusker Simba XV who nearly failed to travel to South Africa after the Kenya Rugby Union delayed paying their allowances. A Sunday departure was shelved for one day as the Union and players dialogued.

According to our Cape Town contact, the teams tied 5-5 at halftime. It was the hosts who tactically kicked a penalty for a line out. The opening try by Claude Tshidibi was as a result of this lineout.

Before the match, Tusker Simba XV had promised to go all out. They defended well despite being restricted to their half. The never-say-die Tusker Simba XV levelled the scores through Mugaisi who crossed the chalk line just before the break.

Confidence level up

Fly-half Ken Andola missed the conversion but the try gave Tusker Simba XV food for thought and a fighting chance especially after the hosts had their confidence level up by gunning for five pointers.

EP Kings could have inflicted more damage after Joshua Chisanga was yellow carded but they defended well rendering the numerical advantage ineffective.

In the second half, Andola nearly gifted EP Kings a try but Tusker Simba XV regrouped and retained possession and it was Mugaisi who completed his brace. Andola converted to break the deadlock for a 12-5 lead.

Maxwell Adaka was next over to stretch the lead 17-5. Substitute prop Pieter Stemmet scored the second try for EP Kings.
