Former Kenya all-rounder Thomas Odoyo, has been appointed interim head coach of the national cricket team ahead of the World Cricket League Championships ties with United Arab Emirates.
Odoyo will be assisted by his former teammate Lameck Onyango. The two replace another former national team all-rounder Sibtain Kassamali who has been in charge of the national team after Steve Tikolo and Martin Suji stepped down after a players had revolted against them in October last year.
The revolt had threatened the team’s fixtures against Namibia forcing the two to step down ‘for the good of the game’.
Cricket Kenya (CK) then set up a five-man independent committee to look into issues surrounding the stand-off between the national team players and technical bench.
Upon return from Namibia, CK appointed Kassamali as an interim coach but Sports News Arena has learned that he failed to impact any positive changes after the team’s two wins over Namibia and the players ‘gave him a hard time in training’.
“The team was too big for Sibu (Sibtain). He had nothing new to offer us. You will at times come to training and just spend the whole day seated doing nothing. After the win over Namibia we needed to move our raining a notch higher but Sibu was not able to do that,” said a current national team player who sought anonymity.
Odoyo and Onyango are not new in the national team technical bench. Odoyo was assistant coach to Robin Brown between 2012 and 2014 before Tikolo was appointed head coach in 2014.
After leaving the national team, Odoyo was appointed the U19 team coach. His first assignment was to lead the team to the 2016 World Cup Qualifiers in Tanzania where Kenya finished third behind Namibia and Uganda.
Onyango was an assistant coach to Mike Hesson before and during the 2011 World Cup.
He was forced out of the team in 2012 when Brown was appointed. He later took over the Women’s team where he has been the coach to date.
Sports News Arena has established that the independent committee that was set up to look into issues surrounding the standoff between the player and the technical bench submitted their report five months ago but CK has opted not to make the finding public.
