Ominde penalty knocks out KCB

Scrumhalf Geoffrey Ominde kicked over a last-minute penalty that saw Top Fry Nakuru progress to the semifinals of the Top Fry Great Rift 10s at the expense of KCB.

Nakuru won the quarterfinal duel 10-7 after trailing 0-7 at halftime. KCB was the stronger side and camped in the Nakuru half for a long period in the first half. Nakuru who were rattled in this half took long to settle and barely reached their opponents' 22.

The bankers were awarded a scrum at the halfway just before the break and it yielded a try by Vincent Opala. Edwin Salamba controlled possesion from the scrum and kicked into Nakuru's dangerzone. Opala chased, gathered the ball to score with a conversion from Billy Isabwa.

Upon resumption, Godfrey Mbeya levelled the scores for Nakuru with a try converted by Ominde. Nakuru then took their play into KCB's territory and a late infringement was enough to give the home side a win.

In the semifinals, they will play Strathmore University who beat Homeboyz RFC 17-0. Churchill Ooko made a defense-splitting run from his half a minute after kickoff to touch down. Ian Lumwaji converted before Ooko completed his brace for a 12-0 halftime lead. Ginton Adongo scored the third try mid-way in the second half.

Technical University of Kenya gave a good fight before going down 7-12 to Kabras Sugar. The sugar millers led 12-0 at halftime with tries from Habil Malik and Brian Tonya plus a conversion by Jospher Ochieng. Peter Wamoto scored a try off sustained pressure by TUK and Anthony Omondi converted but it was too little too late.

Kabras will play Kenya Harlequin FC in semifinals. Quins beat Impala RFC 12-0. They exerted pressure from the whistle. Captain Herman Humwa gave Quins a 5-0 halftime lead with an unconverted try. Eric Shikuku added the second try late in the match with a conversion from Kevin Keegan.

In the Bowl quarter finals, Egerton University beat Brumbies 10-5, Mean Machine won 26-0 over JKUAT, USIU-A beat KCA-U 15-10 while Catholic University earned a 20-0 walkover win over Eldoret RFC.

Egerton will play Machine in the last four while Catholic University has paired USIU-A.

In the Plate semis, Impala plays TUK with KCB facing Homeboyz. In the Shield competition, Brumbies face JKUAT and KCA-U play Eldoret.
