Reigning Defence Forces champions Cherono, Oloitiptip out to retain titles

The 34th edition of the Kenya Defence Forces,KDF, National Cross Country Championship and 15km Road Race trials will be held this Saturday at the Moi Air Base, Eastleigh with a host of former and current World and Africa Champions set to grace the event.

The race that will be used to select KDF team that will represent the force during the national cross country championship to be held at the Ngong Racecourse on February 15 will be headlined by both men and women’s (12 and 8km) defending champions, Leonard Oloitiptip and Gladys Cherono who will represent Kahawa Garrison and Laikipia Air Base respectively.

Cherono, World Athletics Championship 5,000m Silver Medalist should expect stiff opposition from two time Boston Marathon Silver medalist Sharon Cherop who will represent Armour Brigade and 2008 Olympic medalist (1,500m), Nancy Chebet Lang’at who will be running for the hosts, Moi Air Base.

Vincent Kiprop (Kahawa Garrison) , former World Junior Cross Country Champion (2007) will lead the male athletes in the 12 Km race Kiprop who won Bronze at the (2011/12) at the World Cross Country Championship held in Punta Umbria, Spain will fight for the first position with Mark Kiptoo,winner of the 2010 Africa Senior Athletics Championship (10,000) and World Military Games (Brazil) Joseph Ebuya, senior Men world Cross Country championship former winner (2004) and Kiplimo Kimutai, 5,000m World Military Games Gold medalist will also grace the race.

They will run for Engineers Brigade and Laikipia Air Base respectively. The KDF race will be the third this year after Administration Police (AP) and Kenya Police Service that held their trials last Saturday at the Ngong Racecourse.

The first 12 athletes to cross the line will book a ticket to the National Championship.
